Utilising your “Lived Experience” of a mental illness, you will assist people who have a mental health illness and service providers to understand the concept of recovery. Recovery acknowledges that having a mental illness does not mean lifelong deterioration. People with a mental illness are recognised as whole, equal and contributing members of the community, with the same needs and aspirations as everyone else. Supporting the clinical team to achieve the best outcomes for individuals, you will work under the general direction of the Nurse Unit Manager to provide a range of non-clinical support. This will include planning and evaluating educational groups for patients, and increasing their psychological well-being and self-management strategies, in conjunction with Mental Health Service staff. You will serve as a positive role model to patients and carers, and as a source of information on their personal experience of managing mental illness, sharing your recovery skills, strategies and experiences with the patient group.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate individual lived experience of using strategies for recovery from a mental illness, encompassing relapse prevention plans and wellness recovery action plans. You will have a sound understanding of how mental health illness can affect a person, carers and the community, and be capable of working with consumers of mental health services in group settings. Your effective written and verbal communication skills will equip you to present information in a clear way and within a limited timeframe, and to formulate answers to varied questions from individual and group participants. You will work well as an effective team member and be committed to maintaining confidentiality.

The South Australian public sector promotes diversity and flexible ways of working including part-time. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the flexible working arrangements for this role.

Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants are encouraged to apply.  Job Ref: 675347.
